Merl Reagle on Wordplay and Crosswords

Millions of people start their day with a crossword puzzle. A very small group of passionate puzzlers compete in the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament in Stamford, Connecticut. Director Patrick Creadon's new documentary, Wordplay tracks a small group of competitors on the road to the tournament, following them up to the championship round. Simultaneously, Merl Reagle, the mastermind behind the Sunday puzzle in papers like the San Francisco Chronicle, Seattle Times and LA Times is submitting a puzzle to the New York Times, which will later be completed by celebrity puzzlers like Bill Clinton, Jon Stewart and Mike Mussina. Merl Reagle was on hand at the Seattle International Film Festival 2006 to talk about Wordplay and some of the history behind the tournament.

    I am writing to see if you would be interested in interviewing writer/director and founder of the BlueCat Screenplay Competition,Gordy Hoffman, on your podcast.


    Although we would be promoting the 2007 BlueCat Screenplay Competition, Gordy would be open to talk about all aspects of filmmaking and screenwriting, including his recent film, A Coat of Snow.


    Bio:
    Winner of the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival for LOVE LIZA, Gordy Hoffman wrote and directed three short films for Fox Searchlight in 2002. He made his feature directorial debut with his script, A COAT OF SNOW, which world premiered at the 2005 Locarno International Film Festival. A COAT OF SNOW made its North American Premiere at the Arclight in Hollywood, going on to screen at the Milan Film Festival and the historic George Eastman House. Recently, the movie won the 2006 Domani Vision Award at VisionFest, held at the Tribeca Cinemas in New York. A professor at the USC School of Cinematic Arts, Gordy is the founder and judge of the BlueCat Screenplay Competition.
